Now in its fifth year, this exclusive invitation-only event will feature eight of Australia’s top designers and will award new design talent in the BT Emerging Fashion Designer Award and BT Illustration Competition.
The event will be held on Thursday 27 April 2017 at the Royal Hall of Industries, Moore Park, Sydney, and will see BT partner again with Vogue Australia and the Australian Fashion Chamber. BT is proud to be able to help foster and support young talent in this important Australian industry.
We will again be supporting Dress for Success, a not-for-profit organisation which supports women with professional clothing and coaching to find jobs and keep them.

Dion Lee is a designer brand hailing from Sydney, Australia, established in 2009 by its eponymous Creative Director. Renowned for experimental construction combined with traditional tailoring, the brand has pioneered a modern identity for Australian fashion. The Dion Lee aesthetic is technical with an intelligent sensuality.

The award is a major part of BT Runway for Success and will see another great fresh Australian designer join an alumni of previous award winning talent – macgraw (2016), Emma Mullholland (2015), Michael Lo Sordo (2014) and Christopher Esber (2013). The prestigious award provides the winner with a prize package valued at $50,000, and importantly financial advice to help them in their future careers in the fashion industry.
The BT Emerging Fashion Designer Award was established in 2013 with the goal of identifying emerging designers and providing support in the form of financial support, advice and mentoring.
BT is proud to foster and encourage new design talent with the BT Emerging Fashion Designer Award to help one of fashion's rising stars prepare for their best future in an industry that helps others to prepare for their best. BT has been helping Australians and their fashion icons establish and grow their businesses since 1969. It has supported its fashion clients by helping them become better investors, showing them how to grow and protect their wealth and to prepare for the best.
Applicants will be judged on:
The applications received will be vetted by an appointed fashion industry body (the Australian Fashion Chamber). This will include confirming all applicants meet the terms and conditions of entry. Using professional industry experience it will select a list of five semi-finalists based upon the applicants' experience, design style, business vision, manufacturing quality and marketing/ presentation.
A judging panel of two to five fashion industry professionals (media, designers, retailers, and beyond) will be brought together annually as the judging panel for the BT Emerging Fashion Designer Award. One of the members will be appointed as head judge. The semi-finalists applications will be provided to the judging panel, which will score the applications. Based on the scores received the semi-finalists will be placed 1st to 5th.
The top three will be contacted by the appointed fashion industry body to confirm their participation at the BT Runway for Success event held by BT.
The head judge will be present at the BT Runway for Success event to validate the first place decision by the judging panel; the head judge reserves the right to change the decision on the first place position based on the catwalk presentation.
First place will be announced at the BT Runway for Success event. BT will liaise directly with the winner to award the prize.

Sister duo Beth and Tessa MacGraw launched their eponymous label in April 2012 and have since carved their place in the Australian designer landscape. Fusing classic silhouettes with polished, modern lines, macgraw’s use of beautiful, textural fabrications and luxe yet wearable looks are fast becoming a signature for the label.
macgraw debuted at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia in April 2014 to critical acclaim. Elle Australia labeled them ‘designers you need to know’, the Sunday Telegraph named the brand ‘Best newcomer’ and ‘ones to watch’. The label now shows annually at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia and is available in luxury retailers in the UK, USA and Asia and stocked by global e-tailers Farfetch, Moda Operandi and Avenue 32.
Emma's vibrant Australian wildlife designs won her the BT Emerging Fashion Designer Award in 2015. "The award helped me put myself out there - it gave me credibility, kudos and validation," Emma says. "It helps with all the hard work to be recognised and awarded. I was up for a few awards last year so it was nice to win one."
Emma's career has moved up and up since she graduated from Ultimo TAFE in 2011 and was one of only four New Innovators chosen to show at Fashion Week that year. At the age of just 24 she took the plunge and started her own label. In 2015, she collaborated with Mambo with a range that came out in New York. She has also been at the G'Day USA initiative exhibiting her designs.
Michael has created a profitable business selling to a number of large international markets including the US and UK with Net-a-Porter, Harvey Nichols and Avenue 32. Like many designers, Michael says he didn't have a business plan at first.
"I'm a creative, a designer, and I haven't had the experience of implementing strategies and putting them into place. The financial help and assistance and contacts that I made through winning the BT Emerging Designer Award in 2014 – I can't sing their praises highly enough," Michael says. "The BT Group has changed my life."
Christopher Esber was the inaugural winner of the BT Emerging Fashion Designer Award in 2013, edging out fellow finalists Kahlo and Tome. Since graduating from the Fashion Design Studio in 2007 Christopher has showcased his collections at New York Fashion Week, Australian Fashion Week and was named the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival National Designer Award Winner in 2012.
To expand its design support through the fashion industry, BT Financial Group also holds a BT Illustration Competition each year to provide opportunities to budding fashion and design illustrators to expand their experience and credentials.
Current students from three prominent design schools – Whitehouse Institute of Design, Billy Blue College of Design and
FBI Fashion College – are invited to submit a unique illustration to represent our annual fashion not-for-profit event, BT Runway for Success.
The winning illustrator receives a $1,000 cash prize from BT Financial Group and has their work featured alongside some of Australia's iconic fashion designer labels on event collateral in print, online and mobile.
